Ginger spent nearly 10 years at Dogwood Animal Shelter in Missouri, waiting for a family to adopt her. As a young dog, she had been abandoned, and her anxiety made it difficult for her to trust others. Some believed she was “unadoptable” because of her behavior. But Ginger never gave up on the hope of finding a loving home.

For seven years, Ginger’s life remained unchanged. Her brown fur turned gray and white as she waited in her kennel, watching other dogs get adopted while she stayed behind. It was easy to think she might never find happiness.

Then, in 2020, shelter advocate Scott Poore learned about Ginger’s story and decided to help. He shared her story far and wide, giving her a voice after so many years of silence. As people heard about Ginger, hope started to build. Eventually, Beth, a woman who was looking for a companion, reached out and adopted the elderly dog.

Ginger’s life began to transform. She became more confident, learned to trust, and enjoyed the love and safety she had never known. Her new home with Beth allowed her to finally live the life she deserved. Though Ginger was older, she began acting like a playful puppy, enjoying the simple pleasures of being a dog.

Beth and Ginger’s bond grew, and Beth learned that it’s never too late to start over. “You can’t grow in the same place that broke you,” Beth said. “We are thriving together now.”

Ginger’s story proves that there is always hope, no matter how long a shelter pet waits. Many animals still need a second chance, and adopting an “unadoptable” pet can change both their lives. Beth encourages others to give these animals a chance to live and love again.
