People pay homage to an unforgettable stray cat who spread positivity by creating a statue in her owner

Pets plays a special role in our lives, bringing us joy as friendly companions. Sometimes, we don’t have to have our own pets to experience their love. Even a small act of kindness towards a random pet on the walking street can earn you a level of love you never imagined. This story is about something special the community did for such a memorable stray cat who lived on streets of Istanbul.

The name of this cat is “Tombili”. Tombili is a Turkish term used to describe a “chubby cat”. Tombili’s unique behavior made everyone fall in love with her. She appeared relaxed and confident all the time. The way she leaned back and rested on the Kadikoy sidewalk became her iconic pose. It was something that firstly comes to mind when anyone remember Tombili.

If you know, you know how well-known Istanbul is for its stray cats. Even, there is a documentary called “Kedi” which is lives of about stray cats in Istanbul and their connection with the city’s people. It’s obvious that Turkish people cherish the presence of these innocent animals.

When someone shared a picture of her iconic posture, Tombili became a start overnight. People praised her for her chill vibe. Visitors from all over continuously came just to see her. Her confidence and relaxed nature always bring joy to those around her. Unfortunately, on October 1, 2016, she breathed her last. This news shattered everybody. It was hard to accept that Tombili, who had always been chilling in her iconic posture on her favourite location was gone. Life without the loving companion she had gifted to everyone became challenging.

That’s why the people decided to pay homage to the beloved cat who had spread so much positivity and joy. They made a statue of her. It was not just a statue but also an appreciation of her good spirit. People formed a petition called Change.Org to raise awareness and gather support for this project. Thanks to the generosity and gratitude of the community, the statue became a reality. Famous artist, Seval Sahin was chosen to sculpt it, featuring her famous posture. They unveiled it in her favourite place on 4^th of October, World Animal Protection day.

Tombili’s statue is a perfect symbol of gratitude and the never-ending harmony between animals and humans. Though Tombili may be gone, memories of her presence will continue to inspire people for years to come.
